Drying and Storing Your Firewood

Drying Your Pine Firewood

Wondering how long it takes for your pine firewood to dry properly for burning? At Moonshine Firewood, our locally grown and processed firewood is ready for winter 2025. A well-stacked firewood pile dries faster than a randomly dumped pile.  .   For optimal drying, follow our suggestions:

  • Store in a Dry Area: Ensure your firewood is stored in a dry location to expedite the drying process.
  • Try to have it in a sunny spot to allow all day sun and air to reach the sides of the woodpile to help dry the wood.
  • Stack one log deep. If you need to go more than 1 log deep, ensure you have a gap in-between for airflow.
  • Wood sitting on concrete or tarseal dries significantly faster than wood on bare or vegetation-covered ground. If stacked on wood (like a pallet) or a material that will absorb water (dirt, grass etc.), cover it with a layer of plastic before stacking wood on top of if.  Ideally, you should have your stack raised off the floor so air can circulate underneath the pile as well as from the sides and the top.
  • If stored outside, during rainy periods, put a cover over the top of the firewood.  If you create a roof with sheeting or plastic, choose black or clear.  Black absorbs the heat from the sun, clear sheeting allows direct sunlight through.
  • Allow Adequate Time: Depending on environmental conditions, your firewood may take several months to dry thoroughly.
  • Cover in autumn or newly dry firewood will soak up moisture again.
  • When wood is dry, it is lighter in colour and dry to touch rather than wet when it is freshly cut and split.  It is also lighter to carry.

Properly Storing Your Pine Firewood

To ensure your firewood stays in top condition, follow these tips:

  • Covered Storage: Keep your firewood covered to protect it from the elements.
  • Well-ventilated Area: Store your firewood in a well-ventilated spot to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Avoid Direct Contact with Ground: Elevate your firewood off the ground to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Stacked Loosely for Airflow: Stack your firewood loosely to allow for proper airflow, aiding in the drying process.
